Experiences for the whole family – from illusions and ghosts to pumpkin patches and parades.
As the autumn breeze sweeps through Stockholm and the evenings grow darker, there’s a special kind of magic in the air. Autumn break is the perfect opportunity to make memories together whether you want high-energy adventures, creative activities, or simply to enjoy the beauty of the season. Here are our top tips for a Halloween-inspired autumn break in Stockholm that the whole family will love.
Discover Paradox Museum and join them at the Shockholm Parade
Paradox Museum Stockholm is not your average museum. It’s an experience for all ages, from kids and teens to parents and grandparents. With more than 70 interactive illusions to explore, snap photos of, and be amazed by, it’s a place where reality is always up for debate.
During autumn break, the museum is open every day with extended evening hours until 9 PM. On October 31st at 5 PM, Paradox Museum will also be part of the Shockholm Halloween Parade in Kungsträdgården – the largest Halloween celebration in the Nordics with a costume contest.
“We love dressing up and creating magical experiences, so joining Shockholm feels like a perfect match for us”, says Martina Ekström, Marketing Manager at Paradox Museum.
Anyone with a costume is free to enter the parade – children, adults and even dogs. Just sign up for the costume contest in one of the tents to get a number and a name tag. Winners are chosen by a jury and the response from the crowd. The more creative, the better!
Go on a ghost walk in the Old Town
As dusk falls over the cobbled streets and narrow alleys of Gamla Stan, the atmosphere turns deliciously mysterious. What secrets hide behind those century-old facades?
Join a ghost walk and let an expert guide lead you through Stockholm’s darker history, with spine-chilling tales of diseases, murders and of course, ghosts. It’s equal parts spooky and educational, making it a perfect autumn break activity.
Tip: Check out Stockholm Ghost Walk for tours in both Gamla Stan and Södermalm. Walks last about 90 minutes and are suitable for adults and kids (as long as they’re not too easily scared).
Experience Halloween at Gröna Lund
Every autumn, Gröna Lund transforms into a Halloween-themed amusement park filled with pumpkins, ghosts, and plenty of laughter (and screams!). There are five different haunted houses, spooky decorations, light shows, and family-friendly areas with fairy-tale characters and magical autumn installations. Twice a day, a Halloween parade winds its way through the park, a must-see for visitors of all ages.
Your Halloween ticket includes entrance, rides, and haunted houses. And if you’re not a fan of scares? Try the haunted version of the classic pentathlon (5-kamp), perfect to do with friends or colleagues.
Tip: For families with younger children, pay your visit earlier when the atmosphere is gentler. Evenings are darker, scarier, and better suited for the brave.

Enjoy Halloween-themed fika
Who can resist ghost-shaped pastries and pumpkin pies? During autumn break, several of Stockholm’s bakeries serve spooky-sweet creations in both taste and appearance.
Art Bakery at NK is famous for its creative pastries – look out for their seasonal “bake-art” when autumn break arrives. South of the city, Magnus Johansson Bageri & Konditori offers playful Halloween-inspired treats perfect for the whole family.
And if you’re more of a beverage person, try the autumn classic Pumpkin Spice Latte – available at Bröd & Salt (Swedish website) and Starbucks that has multiple locations in Stockholm.
Pick your own pumpkin
Leave the screens at home and head out into the countryside for a cozy autumn activity: picking your very own Halloween pumpkin straight from the field. It’s idyllic, fun, and works just as well for families with kids as for groups of friends or a romantic outing.
At Thorslunda Självplock (Swedish website) on Ekerö, just outside Stockholm, you’ll find a pumpkin wonderland each autumn with everything from classic Halloween pumpkins to decorative and cooking varieties in different colors and sizes. Kids can also enjoy a straw fort, straw maze, and toy tractors. And don’t forget your camera, the fields are made for atmospheric autumn photos.
Tip: Visit earlier in the day for the best selection and a calmer atmosphere.
Take a trip to a cozy autumn island
The Stockholm archipelago is just as beautiful in autumn as in summer – sometimes even cozier. Take the boat to Grinda, where you can hike among autumn leaves, relax in the sauna overlooking the sea, and end the evening with board games by the fire. During autumn break, Grinda also hosts a family-friendly ghost walk.
Head north to Roslagen and you’ll find Marholmen, just an hour from Stockholm. Their autumn break package focuses on family activities such as daily movie screenings, quiz walks, and nature bingo. Perfect for kids of all ages.
Tip: Waxholmsbolaget ferries run year-round. During low season (September 14 – April 29), you can even use your regular SL travel ticket for the trip.
Halloween movie night – at home or at the cinema
When autumn rain hits the windows, few things beat a cozy movie night. Take out your cozy blankets, dim the lights, light a few candles, and fill a bowl with popcorn. Great family-friendly Halloween movies to stream includes Hocus Pocus, Coraline, and Hotel Transylvania – spooky enough for kids, but fun for adults too.
Prefer a trip to the cinema? During autumn break, Filmstaden (Swedish website) screens a variety of Halloween and horror films for both kids and teens who want a little extra thrill. Check their schedule for screenings at your nearest theater.
Tip: Make your movie night extra festive with homemade “monster popcorn.” Coat the popcorn in a sweet caramel glaze for that perfect crunch, add a few drops of food coloring, and finish with candy eyes for the full monster look. See recipe here.
In summary
Book a few activities in advance, but also leave room for spontaneity – it’s often in the unplanned moments that the best autumn break memories are made. And don’t forget: Paradox Museum Stockholm is open every day during the holiday, ready to welcome you into its world of mind-bending illusions, interactive fun, and just the right dose of Halloween magic.
